A Paleo Thanksgiving: Healthy Alternatives to Your Favorite Side Dishes

In less than a month, families and friends will come together to give thanks and eat heartily. Everything from mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, to turkey with gravy, has most of us salivating. But those with dietary goals may dread the holiday that is full of temptations that have the potential to derail health goals.

Luckily, Paleo Thanksgiving recipes offer the flexibility and creativity needed in order to find healthy alternatives to your holiday favorites. In fact, more Paleo Thanksgiving substitutes are popping up in grocery stores, making it easy for those who eat like the caveman to avoid grains. But for the chef that enjoys cooking from scratch, they can make some simple swaps in Thanksgiving side dishes and desserts, such as almond flour for wheat flour, to make them Paleo like the below:

Mashed Cauliflower

Cauliflower is a great (low-carb and ketogenic) substitute to potatoes and can create a similar consistency to mashed potatoes. Use almond milk and coconut cream to give it the creaminess desired. Leveraging the use of garlic, chives, salt and pepper will make the dish even more flavorful.

Paleo Pumpkin Pie

There are many alternatives to flour for the crust – think tapioca flour, coconut or almond flour. And for milk, opt for almond, coconut or other non-dairy milks.

Paleo Stuffing

The paleo alternative to stuffing includes the use of almond flour or other alternative flours. Ghee or clarified butter can be used rather than regular butter or margarine. These swaps also make this great for those who follow the Whole30 diet.

Gravy (A Turkey Must)

You don’t have to eliminate gravy from your Thanksgiving feast. Similarly, to the above, you could just make a simple swap of wheat flour for tapioca starch or tapioca flour.
